Introduction to An Experience-Maker

My name is Rijutha Garimella and I am a senior economics major, minoring in chemistry and political science. Wait what? Chemistry? Although I am an economics major, I dream to one day become a doctor...which is where the "experience-maker" title and the chemistry minor come into play. I am a person that loves trying new things, exploring new places, and taking up crazy challenges. In fact, one of my most favorite things to do is cook, whether it is a recipe I have made a billion times or a dish from a new cuisine, I love cooking...and then eating whatever I make. As I love trying new cuisines, one of my other favorite things to do is travel. I have only been to 5 different countries (including the United States) but I hope to bring that number up quickly. There's just something about immersing myself in a new culture, getting to know the people of that country, and (again) trying their food that I absolutely love. When I'm not travelling or cooking, I enjoy reading, watching TV shows on Netflix, hanging out with my family and friends, and dancing. But, as a student, I usually don't have time to do all of that. I enjoy keeping myself busy and as a result, find myself getting involved in various organizations across campus. In the last few years at OU, I have been a member of the Class of 2017 Council, Campus Activities Council, Student Alumni Association, and the Center for the Creation of Economic Wealth, among others. But, one of my most favorite parts of being involved is being able to make an impact on the community, whether it is on the student body or on a real-world problem. So, after I graduate from college, I hope to continue making an impact on the community while continuing to travel, try new things, and take up challenges along the way.

  1. Hi Rijutha! I think it's amazing that you're an "Experience Maker" with a love of food and traveling. Personally, all of your majors and minors would be the death of me so I applaud you in aiming for degrees in them! Anyway, I hope your senior year is going well, and I wish you the best of luck in the years following your graduation! Your future sounds super bright, and your involvement and charisma are inspiring. I’m positive you’ll become a fantastic doctor and an amazing world traveler.

  2. Hello Rijutha! It is an impressive thing to do when you are majoring in Economics and minoring in Chemistry, and you must be super busy with your extracurricular activities too!! But I love the fact that you like to try out and experience new things as well as taking on a challenge. I hope everything will work out and go well for you on your senior year and I hope your dream will come true!

  3. It is so nice to see someone who has been involved with CCEW, Rijutha: wonderful! That is one of my favorite programs at OU. And I just saw something from TEDxOU with the speaker line-up including YOU, so I was going to include that in the class announcements tomorrow. That is really exciting! There was a TEDxOU talk by a student in the Myth-Folklore class a couple of years ago that was phenomenal, something I keep on sharing with students every semester (Understanding mental illness through empathic storytelling: Jake Morgan and Neal Walia at TEDxOU - Jake is the one who was in Myth-Folklore), and I hope they will get the videos for this year online too so that people who cannot attend will still be able to enjoy the talks. I think it is so great that you are doing that! :-)

  4. Ah, I really love the “experience-maker” concept in your title. It looks like it ties in perfectly with how involved you are with your own life and the world around you, which I really respect. Also, I saw on the class announcements that you were involved with TEDxOU this year, which is wizard! Congrats on that, and good luck with the rest of the semester and graduating—it sounds like you’ll be an awesome doctor.

  5. Hi Rijutha!

I need to start off by saying that I am jealous of your educational stamina and persistence towards your multitude of degrees/goals that you have in your life! I have one major and I can barely keep up with that! I am also envious at your ability to cook! Cooking is such a fun talent to have. I too enjoy watching shows on Netflix. I find it amazing that you are in so many extra curricular’s but are still able to pull off the education degree and demanding requirements of being a senior! I wish you the best of luck in the future!

  6. Wow! It is amazing to read that you have such a passion to be involved in various organizations. Which organization is the most fun / interesting / important to you? Do you get involved with global organizations as well?

Where have you traveled to before? You mentioned that you have been to 5 different countries? Were you born and raised in the USA? And if you can choose one place to travel to right now, where would you want to go and why?

  7. Nice to meet you Rijutha! You sound like you have a lot on your plate! I can't believe you are majoring in two different things! What made you decide to choose two completely unrelated majors? Your goal for traveling sounds nice. Where would you like to travel to next? You sound like a very busy person. I bet your stories will be interesting and I look forward to reading your blog!

  8. Hi Rijutha, pleased to make your acquaintance. I like to travel as well but have been to no other country. I have been to many parts of the united states though and enjoy trying to sample the local tastes and the presentation of food varies greatly from one region to the next that is for sure. I hope you get to do all the traveling you want and also, have the impact you are striving to achieve.

  9. Rijutha, I laughed when you explained your major but I love that you added your chemistry major so you can one day become a doctor! I think it’s awesome that you love to cook because I am the same way! It’s one of my favorite things to do. I think it’s one of the most unique ways to experience a piece of another culture. Nice you meet you!

  10. Hi Rijutha,
It is inspiring that you have been involved with so many activities on campus. I hope that when my children attend college they will be active with on-campus organizations also. I think it is wonderful that you have could immerse yourself in the other countries, cultures, and of course, their cuisine! I applaud you for being an Econ major, I am having to take micro this semester and am gaining a new appreciation for economics! I look forward to reading your stories!

  11. Nice to meet you Rijutha. It is cool that you have been involved with so many campus organizations. As for me I haven't been involved with much on campus but we do have one thing in common. We both enjoy traveling and hope to one day see more of the world. Hard work pays off, and from the looks of it you are working really hard getting a minor in two separate fields.

  12. Rijutha it is nice to meet you! I am very jealous of the fact that you know how to cook. I especially do not know how to cook and do not have any desire to do so. However, I love eating! I like that you are so adventures and love trying new foods. I feel as if I have a phobia of new tastes. I know that sounds weird. However, I am also impressed by your major and how many different things you are doing. Staying involved and trying to become a doctor is not joke. I wish you luck on the rest of the semester and look forward to your stories!

  13. Rijutha, that's really cool that you have such a variety in your majors and minors! I wish I was good at cooking! I am decent at breakfast (eggs, bacon, pancakes, waffles, muffins) and crockpot recipes but that's about it. I have only been to 2 countries. Wow you are really involved! I (shamefully) have not gotten involved in anything during my 4 years at OU. I honestly like to stay at home and not explore as much, so I'd say we're pretty different! Thanks for sharing!

  14. Rijutha it's so nice to meet you. It must be really exciting that you're graduating soon. I noticed that you said you want to be a doctor. What kind of physician are you wanting to become? I also find that it is interesting that you enjoy cooking. You said that you've done a billion dishes, which one is your favorite? I also enjoy Netflix. I really love The Originals, Grey's Anatomy, Shameless, etc.

  15. Wow, that is awesome how you are also studying chemistry. All of your choices are tough fields in terms of schooling. I applaud you for taking on the challenge! I wish in the future that I could travel to the places that you have. It has always been a lifelong dream. It was nice to meet you and good luck on your finals!
